Figure-Eight Bend

A figure-eight bend is used to tie two pieces of rope or webbing together, usually to achieve more length. By introducing a knot in the middle of the system, the descent device, pulleys, edge rollers, or other hardware may be required to pass this knot and rescuers must plan accordingly.

Applications

Secure two ropes together to gain more length, make prusik loops.

Directions

Loosely tie a figure-eight in one rope, leaving 6 inches of extra rope remaining. With the other rope, retrace the first figure-eight with the other rope’s standing end. Make sure the lines below the loop are parallel and dressed.
