Figure-Eight on a Bight

A figure-eight on a bight is used to secure a bight in the end of the rope. This knot is commonly used to “tie-in” to the rope. A figure-eight on a bight is a large knot with relatively gradual bends (as compared to an overhand), and is easily recognized by the tell tale “8” shape.

Applications

Tying into the rope, securing rescuers, litters, anchor plates, anchorages, or equipment to the end of a rope.

Directions

Form a bight of rope, pass the bight under and around the standing end, two strands. Pass the bight through the loop. Make sure the lines below the loop are parallel and dressed.
