A Collaborative Effort: Enhancing Fall Protection on the Delaware Memorial Bridge

,

Ensuring worker safety on one of the busiest twin-span suspension bridges in the U.S. was no small task. When Gravitec joined the Delaware Memorial Bridge project, we knew our expertise would play a crucial role in preventing potential fall hazards for years to come.

In April 2020, Gravitec was approached to assist in developing fall protection specifications for the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Initially, the project scope included a comprehensive fall protection system covering multiple bridge structures. Gravitec established detailed technical specifications to guide the design and implementation of these critical safety solutions.

Understanding the Scope

Gravitec played a key role in the early stages of the project, working to develop fall protection specifications that addressed the unique safety needs of the bridge. The original plan called for horizontal lifelines, anchorage systems, ladder access solutions, and other protective measures to ensure safe egress and access for maintenance teams. This initial project was focused entirely on defining the technical requirements, materials, and compliance standards needed to support the project.

Project Delays & Budget Adjustments

When Gravitec began developing the specifications in 2020, the expectation was that the project would be put out for bid in 2021. However, due to COVID-19-related delays, the bid was postponed until 2022. By the time the project reached the bidding stage, construction costs had risen significantly, and the total estimated expenses exceeded the original budget projections.

To move forward, a phased approach was taken, prioritizing the ladder access systems as the first step in enhancing fall protection on the bridge.
